Section: Antimicrobial Prophylaxis
Antimicrobial Prophylaxis is a proven strategy to reduce surgical site infections (SSIs) by maintaining antimicrobial drug levels in the body during surgery, the highest risk period of potential infection. All surgical patients should receive antibiotics prior to cardiac, hip and knee joint replacement, or spinal surgery, and cefazolin is standard. However, what is recommended may vary based on the case as well as on the patient. Below are resources on dosage, timing, and more.
